Pacal Votan ruled the Maya empire in the 600's, and was responsible for building most of the amazing city of Palenque, in Chiapas, Mexico, where this carving graces the cover of his sarcophagus. He is called Sun Shield, and Pacal the Great, and is considered by many to be the chief engineer of the Mayan mission of constructing their monumental cities with astrological alignment. His prophecy speaks of the closing of this world cycle in 2012, and thus his image makes for a highly unusual and powerful tattoo.
