Called the Scottish man’s constant companion, the Sgian-dubh "black knife" was usually worn in the stocking, but was occasionally worn on the belt. The Sgian-dubh was an all purpose knife able to stand up to daily use yet was still accepted as fashionable dress. With it tattooed on the leg it appears as if a knife is tucked into the kilt socks, so the man is always armed and ready to come to the defense of Scotland.
